I'm so glad you decided to join this discussion forum and hope that you will find 2011 a year of adventurous reading!
Let me introduce myself. I am Patty Uttaro, the Director of the Rochester Public Library and a lifelong reader. When we started planning the events to commemorate the 100th Anniversary Year of the Rochester Public Library, I felt I had to create some kind of reading project that would highlight the mission of the RPL throughout the last century.
Plainly put, libraries are about reading, whether it's reading a book with covers and pages, or reading on a computer screen, an e-reader, a smartphone, or any other occurrence of the printed word.
Reading, and comprehending what we read, is an analytical skill that elevates humans above other species. Reading continues to be the primary mission of the library. Although the delivery of reader services has changed over the last 100 years, the public's appetite for new reading adventures has not diminished one iota.
During the 100 years RPL has been in existence, literary masterpieces have been published, alongside a plethora of other books that were thoroughly enjoyed by library users but that perhaps didn’t have the staying power of the masterpieces. You will find two lists of books published in each year - one listing the notable books published that year and the other listing the books that were bestsellers. Sometimes there is an overlap, but more often than not, the two lists stand alone.
I hope that you will enjoy selecting and reading books from the past, and that you visit this forum often and share your thoughts and discoveries.
